Name: Larry Andrews
DIAGNOSIS: Sickle-cell Anemia
Larry looks like a normal, teenage boy. He’s tall, handsome, and bright eyed. He, like every other teenager, spends most of his time playing on the cell phone. Larry is different though. Larry is a victim of Sickle Cell Anemia.
Sickle Cell Anemia is a disease prevalent in African Americans and can be incredibly painful. Larry's mother found out about the Sickle Cell Anemia when Larry was only three. But, for her denial was her first reaction. After a few serious hospital visits his momknew that Larry's problem was real.
"It hurts when you stay still, so you have to keep moving around," Larry said. "The worst is at night so I don't sleep much."
There is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia, however every year Larry is seeing improvements. This year Larry has only had to make two hospital visits.
