Name: Jenea Berrios
AGE: 9
Diagnosis: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Jenea Berrios had always been a healthy girl until she nearly lost her life to Leukemia in the Summer of 2006. She began complaining of aching bones and a loss of appetite. Her mother took Jenea to her primary care doctor. The doctor said as long as Jenea’s spine didn’t hurt, everything was probably fine.
Only two weeks later, Jenea’s stepfather found her
throwing up and foaming at the mouth. She was taken to Shands Jacksonville where doctors told Jenea’s parents that she might die. She was in shock and her red blood count was down to 1 percent, a level that would normally be fatal.
After she was stabilized, Jenea was taken to Wolfson Children’s Hospital where further tests determined she had ALL. She remained on life support for two more days and thanks to the expertise and equipment at Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital doctors were able to save her life.
Just two weeks after being diagnosed, Jenea went into remission. She is now on the road to recovery and things are looking good. Jenea is enrolled at Lake Forest School of Performing Arts. She says she wants to focus on creative writing.
