Jack & Luke E.

When Jennifer and David discovered they were having twins, like any new parents they were thrilled! However, their happiness was cut short when they discovered there were complications. At 16 weeks pregnant, Jennifer and David discovered that Jack had no amniotic fluid, and that they should prepare for the worst.

Doctors said that Jack's lungs would not be able to develop. Additionally, his water had ruptured and he was at high risk for infection. At 19 weeks, Jennifer started having contractions. Soon after, at 22 weeks, the doctors worried about more complications for both boys and Jennifer was admitted into the hospital, where she and the babies were checked on every 4 hours. The goal was to try to make it to 24 weeks, at this point doctors thought that Luke would have a 50/50 chance of survival, but that Jack would never take a breath. Jennifer made it 8 more weeks.

On September 7, 2007, at Wolfson Children's Hospital, Jack and Luke were born, weighing 2 lbs 13 ounces and 2 lbs 11 ounces, respectively. Immediately they were placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) transporter, which was purchased through Children's Miracle Network funds. They were both extremely sick and not responding well, and they were both maxed out on their medications. On day two, Luke made a turnaround, and Jack soon followed. Lisa, a Nurse Manager at Wolfson Children's Hospital's NICU, said "They made the most remarkable turnaround I've ever seen." In fact, nurses and doctors told the parents that they had never seen a baby survive without having their amniotic fluid. After 8 weeks in the NICU, Jennifer and David were able to take both their baby boys home. Today, both boys are happy and healthy.
